Try the Nudies from Barossa

Early Millenium, having somehow studied and worked closely in the broader wine industry, three mates decided to put their efforts together, feeling pretty bare to create Naked Run Wines, a boutique, family-run venture. Post-University, Steven, Jayme and Brad followed separate career paths all within different capacities of the Wine industry before they got back to drive their project.

The first year saw Naked Run Wines start with their very first Clare Valley Riesling before producing a Barossa Valley Grenache Shiraz blend.

Naked Run Wines source their premium fruit from the world-renowned Barossa Valley and Clare Valley, source of high quality flavours and intense colours in all of their wines. Challenge is to continue to grow, produce amazing wines whilst enjoying the process. That’s why the boys source their fruit from their own and a couple of selective vineyards throughout the Barossa.

Aldo Baraglia’s vineyard is situated in Williamstown, southern Barossa Valley where Aldo (the winemaker’s father) has tendered to his vineyard for his entire life. The 70+ yo dry-grown Grenache vines have survived droughts, floods and even housing developments. These old relics are harvested and pruned by hand and receive minimal input throughout the season. In addition to the old Grenache, there is another block of younger 25 yo Grenache and Chardonnay recently grafted to Pinot Gris.

The Hill 5 vineyard was purchased by Steve and wife Laura in 2005. Elevated at 475m, this vineyard is one of the highest in the Clare Valley, perfect site for Rieslings. No wonder a further few acres of Riesling were recently planted on an eastern facing slope furthering the already successful vineyard’s potential.

Planted in 2001 in Gomersal, the Lindner vineyard is entirely Shiraz. This vineyard is early ripening and produces big, rich, full bodied wines. Naked Run is proud to say the Lindner vineyard provides the key element for the BWC, so much so in 2008 the BWC was made solely from Lindner fruit.

Naked Run Wines has over the years received growing recognition from James Halliday, been awarded Gold Medal at the Canberra International Riesling Challenge 2010, mentioned as Best Grenache blend at the Trophy 2012 Barossa Wine Show and top-listed Young Guns of Wines 2013.

Naked Run Wines

  • The sweeter ‘Sweet Kiss’ is also made from 100% Clare Valley Riesling. Best enjoyed young but will age gracefully. It displays lavender and stone fruit characters, with a sweetness that is wonderfully balanced with acid. Great on a warm summers’ day.

  • ‘The First’ Clare Valley Riesling was the very first wine produced under the Naked Run Wines label. Made from 100% Clare Valley free-run juice, fruit is sourced from single vineyard located at 475m Sevenhill, a relatively cool site for the region. The vines are grown on red-grey loam over slate sub-soil which produce mineral characteristics within the wine. The fruit is machine-harvested at night, processed quickly to minimise skin contact, then pressed and cold-settled for 3 days before being racked for fermentation. Pale yellow straw in colour with green hues, The First displays typical delicate floral, perfume and bath salt aromas. Its palate is dominated by lemon and limes with a steely acid backbone, allowing the wine to age elegantly for years.

  • In recognition of Aldo’s entire life, winemaker Steve’s Father, who gave great care to produce highest fruit quality from the dry-grown old vines, ‘The Aldo’ Grenache Shiraz was named after Aldo himself. Fruit is hand-harvested and crushed into open fermenters with a small parcel going through natural ferment. After 2 weeks on skin, the wine is basket-pressed to older French oak barriques for maturation. At blending, Shiraz is added to give texture, weight and complexity to the palate. ‘The Aldo’ is bottled early to capture the fresh fruit characters and has a deep crimson colour. Wine shows lifted dark cherries, raspberry and confection aromas. Palate is big and juicy, with a lovely well-rounded mouthfeel. Excellent intensity and length. Made to be enjoyed young when the fruit is at its peak, ‘The Aldo’ is the winery’s most consistent wine vintage in, vintage out.

  • ‘Hill 5’ is a traditional Australian blend of two premium reds. Shiraz is sourced from the winemaker’s own small vineyard ‘Hill 5’ at Sevenhill, whilst the Cabernet comes from a small related vineyard managed by one of the Nudies, at Watervale. Small parcels of the fruit are fermented in open fermenters. The wine is fermented for 16 days skin on, then basket pressed to new and older French oak barriques. Wine is bottled after 20 months of maturation. ‘Hill 5’ Shiraz Cabernet has a deep cherry red colour. Nose shows lifted pepper, spice, coming from the Cabernet portion, as well as chocolate and jube notes delivered by the Shiraz portion. Palate is rich and full bodied, with great weight and length. The roasted meat and chocolate characters abound, balancing perfectly with the dusty tannins of the Cabernet.

  • ‘BWC’ Shiraz is named after the 3 Nudies (Baraglia, Wood and Currie). Fruit for this single vineyard wine is sourced from a low-yielding vineyard in the highly regarded sub-region of Greenock, North of the Barossa. Fruit is crushed and de-stemmed into small open fermenters. The wine undertakes natural ferment for 17 days skin on, then basket-pressed to new and older French and American oak barriques. After 20 months of maturation, the wine is bottled. ‘BWC’ has a deep crimson colour. On the nose, notes of chocolate and spice, with a hint of raspberries. Palate is rich and full, showing powerful ripe fruit with silky tannins that will only soften out with age, finished off with hints of charry, spicy oak.
